To fly a B-25.

To go to the Philippines.

You finish your final training with a B-25. Then your squadron ships out to a small island in the Pacific Ocean called Morotai, close to the Philippines. For your first mission, your target is the Philippine island of Mindanao, where the Japanese have an airfield. You’ll fly your B-25 at low altitude and use powerful machine guns to fire at the Japanese on the ground. Then you’ll drop your bombs.

As you drop down just above the treetops, Japanese anti-aircraft guns fire up at you. But their aim is bad, and they miss. Other planes in your squadron have dropped their bombs.

“They scored some direct hits,” your co-pilot, Smitty, says.

“Yeah,” you say, “but the smoke is so thick I can barely see the target.”

You fire the B-25’s machine guns as you prepare to release your bombs. With the push of a button, a ton of bombs shoot out of the plane. You pull up to begin the flight back to Morotai.
